Headquartered in Moorpark, California, Aldik is one of the largest distributors of artificial flowers in the United States. Scope of work included office space and total re-design of their 200,000 sq. ft. warehouse. The primary focus of the project was converting the existing inefficient HID-metal halide technology to a more efficient, state-of-the-art quality lighting source.
Existing warehouse lighting was not properly designed for Aldik’s current operation. Storage racks densely stacked with boxes up to 35 feet high blocked much of the existing sky lighting. Several rows of lights had non-functional or no fixtures at all. Bids received from two other electrical contractors both recommended repairing or repositioning fixtures and adding more metal halide fixtures to improve current light levels. These recommendations would have improved the lighting, but were not comprehensive enough. They would have significantly increased electrical consumption, operating costs, and increased existing annual electrical expense by an additional $35,000.
Reliable Energy Concepts, Inc. performed a thorough analysis of the facility, taking into account design requirements, employee needs, and energy-saving possibilities. A complete reconfiguration of the facility, including conversion of the metal halides to an energy-efficient T5 and T8 fluorescent lighting system, was recommended. This solution would improve illumination throughout the facility and reduce annual energy consumption by over $55,000. When completed, this project had a payback of one year, as calculated by Aldik’s Chief Financial Officer.
By adding energy-saving controls to the new lighting system, Reliable Energy Concepts, Inc. increased annual savings by an additional $18,000, and secured a $20,000 incentive for Aldik from So. Calif. Edison. Net payback for the control system was less than 8 months.
Aldik’s expectations were further exceeded when it came to properly lighting their samples display area. New high-color rendering lighting made the flowers look sharper and more vibrant than ever before.
Every aspect of this lighting project was a total success for Aldik. Not only did they improve their lighting, they were also able to save a significant amount of money on their electric bill. This was something they were not even aware could be done when they began, but will continue to benefit from financially and operationally for years to come.
